창조성과 예술 (데이빗 루이즈 목사님)

전환적인 창조성 (Transformational Creativity)
"미녀와 야수"라는 디즈니 애니메이션 영화를 그려낸 주요 애니메이션 작가들 중의 한 사람은 기독교인이었습니다. 그는 영화속에서 야수가 인간으로 변화되는 마지막 장면을 어떻게 그려내야 할 지를 고민하면서 계속 기도하였습니다. 기도하는 중에 그는 하늘에서 내려온 빛이 야수의 내면을 먼저 변화시킨 후에, 겉모습까지 변화시키는 장면에 대한 감동을 받게 되었습니다 (아래 유튜브 영상 참조).
하나님을 사랑하였던 어느 애니메이션 작가의 손을 통해 표현된 마지막 장면...
이것이 우리에게 전해주는 의미는, 이처럼 하나님의 경건한 원칙과 명철에 바탕한 것입니다.
그리고 그 애니메이션 작가는 바로 주님의 몸된 교회에 속한 우리의 형제였습니다!
예술, 창조성, 그리고 표현...
이 모든 것들이 주님 보시기에 참된 것입니다. 그러나 예술가들의 모임과 교회의 리더쉽 간에는 넘어서야 할 어떤 벽이 존재합니다. 양쪽이 함께 상대방에 대한 선입견과 의심을 내려놓고, 함께 대화하고 기도하는 가운데 성경말씀을 통해서 안전지대를 만들어 나가야 합니다.
예술가들에게 안정감을 줄 수 있을때, 그들을 양육할 수 있습니다. 제 경우를 보자면, 부모로서 아이들을 주안에서 양육하기 위해서, 저는 먼저 아이들에게 안정감을 줍니다. 우리 예술가들에게도 마찬가지로 (교회로부터 주어지는) 안정감이 먼저 필요합니다.
창조 그 자체가 하나의 표현입니다! 하나님의 가장 경이로운 성품은 그분의 창조성입니다. 만약 우리가 하나님의 형상을 따라 창조되었다면, 우리 역시 창조적인 존재가 될 수 있는 가능성을 가지고 있는 것입니다. 우리 인간이 가지는 창조성은 하나님의 창조성을 반영하는 것입니다. 우리가 그분의 창조성을 반영할때, 우리는 그분의 어떤 부분을 이해하기 시작하는 것이며, (그런 이해를 통해서) 예배로 응답하게 될 것입니다.
저는 목사님들께, 예술가들을 위해서 안전한 장소를 만들어 주시기를 부탁드립니다. 저 역시 한명의 목사로서, 예술가를 목양하는 과정에서 목사님들이 겪을 수 있는 어려움을 잘 알고 있습니다.
어떤 목사님들은 이런 성도들이 교회에 가져올 수 있는 부정적인 결과에 대한 두려움 때문에, 또는 그들에 대한 이해의 부족으로 인해서 이런 종류의 사역을 교회에서 아예 금지하시기도 합니다.
하지만 그런 성도들이야 말로 자신을 창조적으로 표현할 수 있는 안전한 장소를 필요로 합니다. 물론 예술적인 성향을 가진 성도들은 목사님과 교회에 세워진 권위에 의한 교정을 기꺼이 받아들일 준비가 되어있어야 합니다. 따라서 양자간의 대화와 소통이 꼭 필요합니다.
자신의 창조성을 교회 안에서 표현하다가 상처입고 찢겨진 예술가들과 창조적인 성향을 지닌 성도들이 얼마나 많은지요! 우리 교회는 그들에게 안전한 장소를 마련해 주어야 합니다. 그저 예술을 교회 안에서 용인하는 것으로 그쳐서는 안됩니다. 우리 교회에게는 그들을 잘 양육해야 할 책임이 있는 것입니다.
창조성을 잃었을때 그 댓가는 작지 않습니다.
얼마전에 저는 미시간주 여행중에 오랫동안 교회사역에 몸담은 어떤 성도님을 위해 기도하였습니다. 자신의 이야기를 꺼내놓기 시작하면서, 그는 마치 애기처럼 울기 시작했습니다. 그는 자신이 어렸을때 그래픽 아트와 그림에 흥미가 있었다고 말했습니다.
그가 한번은 양의 그림을 그렸는데, 그는 다양한 색깔 예컨대 오렌지색, 빨강색, 보라색의 양들을 그렸다고 합니다. 그때 그의 부모님과 친척들이 그를 조롱하였습니다. "이 멍청한 녀석! 빨간 양이 어딨니? 양은 하얀 색이야!" 그들은 소년의 가슴 속에서 용솟음치는 창조성을 볼 수 없었던 것입니다.
가족들의 조롱섞인 반응은 그 소년에게 깊은 상처를 주었습니다. 삼십대 중반이 된 그는 사실 대단한 예술가입니다. 하지만 그는 그의 상처를 내면 깊이 감추어 두고 있으며, 아직도 치유를 받는 중에 있습니다. 그는 자신의 그림을 서랍장 속 깊숙한 곳에 쳐박아 두고 있습니다. 오랫동안 그는 그의 부모로부터 계속적으로 비슷한 상처를 받았습니다. 그에게는 아직도 치유를 위한 시간이 더 필요합니다.
많은 사람들에게 유사한 경험이 있습니다. 제가 아는 어떤 친구는 놀라울 정도로 예술적인 사람인데, 그는 운동보다는 댄스를 좋아했습니다. 그는 미식축구 또는 다른 격렬한 운동들 따위에는 소질이 없었습니다. 하지만 그의 아버지는 소위 '남자다운' 운동을 원했고, 계집애들이나 하는 댄스를 원하는 아들을 이해할 수 없었기 때문에, 아들을 많이 힘들게 했습니다. 아버지가 주는 온갖 종류의 조롱으로 인하여 어린 소년의 심령은 지워질 수 없는 상처를 입게 되었습니다.
세상에는 엄청나게 많은 예술가들과 창조적인 사람들이 있습니다. 제가 동서양을 막론하고 어디를 가든지, 저는 이런 종류의 사람들이 모인 집단에서 상처와 눈물을 보게 됩니다. 예술은 매우 주관적이고 개성적인 것이기 때문에, 종종 많은 갈등을 야기합니다. (이런 종류의 소위 '창조적이고 예술적인' 사람들이 갈등을 만들어 내는 것은 물론 교회에서도 마찬가지입니다.-- 역자주)
예술에 대한 두려움
교회에는 예술 내지 예술적인 사람들에 대한 어떤 공포감 내지는 두려움이 있습니다. 하지만 역사적으로 볼때 모든 형태의 영적인 운동과 갱신에서 음악과 사운드가 중요한 역할을 했습니다. 사람들은 역동적인 경험 없이는 하나님의 영과 하나님의 생명을 체험하기 어렵습니다.
주님은 예술가 집단에게 그분을 예배할 수 있는 안전한 장소를 마련해 주시기 원하십니다. 물론 그것은 누구나 자기 하고 싶은대로 하는 무질서와 방종을 의미하는 것은 결코 아닙니다.
저는 교회의 리더십이 예술가집단에게 통찰력과 도움, 그리고 보호를 제공할 수 있어야 한다고 생각합니다. 교회의 리더십은 예술이 양육되고, 자라나며, 표현될 수 있는 안전한 장소를 제공해야 합니다. 예술적인 능력을 억압당하고 비난당했던 이들에게 치유를 제공해야 합니다.
그것이 바로 교회가 해야 할 일입니다.
교회에서 거절당한 U2 이야기
유명한 락음악 밴드 U2를 아십니까? (역자주: 이 그룹은 전세계적으로 1억5천만장 이상의 앨범을 판매했으며, 그래미상 22차례를 포함한 많은 수상경력이 있습니다. 특히 인권을 강조하는 노래를 많이 불렀는데, 대표적으로 여호수아 트리 (Joshua Tree)가 있습니다. 리더 보노는 노벨평화상 후보로 두차례 선정되었습니다.)
이 그룹의 리드싱어 보노는 오래전에 제 친구가 인도하는 성경공부 모임에 속해 있었습니다. 제 친구에 따르면 보노씨 만큼 하나님에 대한 열정을 가진 사람을 본적이 없다고 합니다.
이처럼 U2는 예수님의 몸된 교회에서 비롯되었지만, 그들이 음악활동을 시작했을때 교회는 그들을 이해하지 못했습니다. 그들의 자서전에 따르면, 자신들의 음악이 교회에서 (크리스쳔다운 것이라고) 인정받지 못했을때, 그들은 그룹을 해체하는 것까지도 심각하게 고려했다고 합니다.
교회는 그들의 엄청난 열정과 재능을 (주님의 시각에서) 어떻게 보아야 할 것인지 알지 못했습니다. 그래서 그들에게는 교회안에 설 자리가 없었습니다.
결국 그들은 세속적인 음악을 하는 그룹이 되었으며, 어느 나라를 가든지 초대형운동장을 손쉽게 채워버리는 세계적인 인기를 얻게 되었습니다.
하지만 그들은 자신들이 그토록 원했던 교회의 축복을 받지는 못하였습니다. 그들이 자신들의 예술적 표현을 할 수 있는 안전한 장소를 교회 안에서 찾지 못했다는 것은 하나의 비극이라 할 것입니다.
U2의 [Achtung Baby]라는 노래 중에 다음과 같은 가사가 있습니다.
"나를 받아줄 교회가 하나라도 있다면, 나는 (그곳에서 형제들과) 떡을 떼고 포도주를 마셨을 거에요. 바로 지금 나에게 그것이 필요하거든요. 내가 믿을만한 그런 (교회내의 예술적인) 운동이 있었다면 나는 거기에 동참했을 거에요." 이 노래는 가요순위에서 1등에 올랐습니다.
다른 노래 [One]에서 그들은 절규합니다.
"당신들은 사랑은 성전이고 사랑은 숭고한 명령이라고 말합니다. 하지만 당신들은 나에게 (교회로)들어오라고 하고서 나를 (교회 안에서) 기어다니게 만들었어요 (힘들게 했어요). 당신들이 내게 줄수 있는 것이 상처뿐이라면, 나는 더이상 버틸 힘이 없어요. 하나의 사랑, 하나의 피, 정말 그렇다면 우리는 서로를 지탱해주어야 하지 않나요?"
그들이 누구를 향해 이 노래를 부르고 있습니까?
바로 교회입니다...
저는 그들의 생활방식이나 교회를 떠나기로 한 결정을 지지하는 것은 결코 아닙니다. 그 밴드는 하나님의 영광을 드러낼 사명을 가지고 있었습니다. 그들의 음악적 재능들은 우리에게 주어진 기업의 일부였습니다.
하지만 그들은 교회로부터 거절당했고, 그들은 자연스럽게, 자기들을 받아주는 곳으로 갈 수 밖에 없었습니다. 그래서 그들은 세상으로 간 것입니다.
창조성을 풀어놓는 것
교회는 창조성을 지켜주고, 예술을 보호하며 후원하는 역할을 통해 예술분야를 구속해야 합니다. 하나님은 교회를 깨우는 것을 원하시지만, 동시에 세상에 있는 예술과 예술가들을 구속하여 교회의 품안으로 되돌리시는 것도 원하십니다.
예술가들에게는 작품을 통해 자신들을 표현하고자 하는 내재적인 욕구가 있습니다. 하지만 교회가 그들의 욕구를 억압해왔기 때문에, 우리들중 많은 이들이 교회에서 인정받는 예술이란 것은 '그저 그런 것'이라는 생각을 가지게 되었습니다 (권위에 따르지 않는 혁신적인 창조성을 가진 사람들은 교회 밖으로 내쫓겼으므로, 다른 이들은 교회의 권위에 따라 자신들의 창조성을 억압했기에 그저 그런 작품만이 교회에서 인정받게 되었다는 의미로 보임-- 역자주).
그것은 성경적이지 않습니다. 우리의 왕, 우리 주님께 우리는 항상 최고의 것을 드려야 합니다. 하지만 오랫동안 교회는 좋은 것을 얻기 위해서는 교회 밖으로 나가야만 했습니다. 솔로몬이 솜씨좋은 이교도 건축가들을 고용하여 성전을 지었던 것처럼 말입니다. 역대하 2:13-14절은 말합니다.
내가 이제 재주 있고 총명한 사람을 보내오니 전에 내 아버지 후람에게 속하였던 자라. 이 사람은 단의 여자들 중 한 여인의 아들이요 그 아비는 두로 사람이라. 능히 금, 은, 동, 철과 돌과 나무와 자색 청색 홍색실과 가는 베로 일을 잘하며 또 모든 아로새기는 일에 익숙하고 모든 기묘한 양식에 능한 자이니 그에게 당신의 재주 있는 사람들과 당신의 아버지 내 주 다윗의 재주있는 사람들과 함께 일하게 하소서
역대하 5:1-7절은 주님께 영광을 올려드리고자 (이교도건축가들의 솜씨를 빌려 지어진-- 역자주) 성전을 봉헌하는 장면을 묘사합니다. 교회는 (세상의 솜씨를 빌리거나 -- 역자주) 지금 교회가 가지고 있는 '그저 그런 것'들에 만족하는 대신에, 최상품들을 다시 교회안으로 가져오기 위해서 예술가들을 양육해야 합니다.
예수를 믿지 않는 영국인 댄서와 비행기안에서 우연히 대화를 나눈 적이 있습니다. 우리가 창조성에 대해 이야기를 나누는 중에, 그녀는 모든 피조물을 지으신 창조주의 존재를 부인할 수 없게 되었습니다. (창조성에 대한) 대화를 통해, 우리가 예수님을 나눌 기회가 생긴 것입니다. 나는 그때 주님이 말씀하시는 것을 느꼈습니다.
"이것이 바로 내가 예술가들의 공동체 안에서 행하기를 원하는 것의 징표란다."
예전에 캔사스 시티에 사는 50대의 스테인드 글라스 화가를 만난 적이 있습니다. 그는 자신의 인생이 무가치하다고 생각했으며, 자신은 하나님과 아무런 상관이 없다고 느꼈습니다. 그런데 그는 자신의 사진작품 하나를 보여주었는데, 제가 보기에 그것은 매우 뛰어난 것이었습니다. 그는 엄청난 예술적 재능을 가지고 있었습니다.
그래서 저는 그에게 말했습니다. "당신의 작품을 통해서도 사람들이 구원받을 수 있다고 믿어요. 누군가에 의해서 씨가 뿌려지고, 누군가 물을 뿌려주고, 또 다른 누군가가 그것을 수확하는 법이거든요." 그러자 그는 곧 울기 시작했습니다. 그는 말했습니다. "당신이 나를 구했습니다. 나를 구했습니다."
제가 "무슨 소리입니까?"라고 묻자, 그는 "나는 내 인생이 쓸모없는 것이라 생각했습니다. 나는 가정모임을 인도한 적도 없고, 리더십 훈련을 받은 적도 없고, 남들(다른 성도들)이 한 것을 나는 해본 적이 없었습니다."
이분의 경우처럼, 창조성을 받은 사람들에게 교회는 말해 주어야 합니다.
당신들이 가진 창조적이고 예술적인 재능은 주님이 주신 것이며,
당신들의 작품은 하나님의 나라에서 매우 소중하다는 것을 말입니다!!!

Creativity and the Arts

"For by Him, all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whetherthrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him." (Col. 1:16).
Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (Gen. 1:26-27).
Transformational Creativity
One of the main animators from the Disney movie Beauty and the Beast is a Christian. He prayed and prayed over the last scene in the movie where the beast turns into a man. He wrestled with how to illustrate this ending. Through prayer, he felt led to use a light coming down from heaven, which changes the beast from the inside out! In the hands of a craftsman who loved God, his interpretation was founded on his godly principles and understandings. And he is a part of us, the church!
Art, creativity, and expression are all valid in the eyes of the Lord. There has been a chasm created between the artistic community and church leadership that needs to be bridged. Both sides need to lay down their defenses and come together to talk, pray, and search the scriptures in order to create an arena of safety. When there is safety, nurturing can take place. As a parent, I need to let my children know that they are safe so that I can nurture and raise them in the ways of the Lord. So it is with our artists.
Creation itself is an expression of God's most awesome characteristics: his creativity. If we arecreated in God's image, and God is creative, then we too have the potential to be creative beings.
Human creativity reflects the divine. When we begin to reflect his creativity, people will begin to understand something of their Creator and will respond with worship.
In the church, there is tension between those who want to express themselves artistically and those (usually in leadership) who feel the need to exert control and order in this area.
This struggle is most common between a pastor and worship leader or dance team. The leadership of the church and those involved with the arts must work together rather than struggle against one another. Zechariah 12 speaks of God's desire to have a healthy relationship between Jerusalem, "the center of the Word," and Judah, a city whose very name means "praise."
Pastor to Pastor: Expressing Worship Safely and Wisely
To those who have a pastoral role, I want to encourage you to begin creating a safe place for those involved in the arts, whatever they might be. As a pastor, I realize he difficulty that some of us experience when we try to pastor artists. The response of some pastors is to shut this area out of church life, mostly out of fear or from a lack of understanding of the arts and/or the artist.
People need a safe place to express themselves. At the same time, artists must be willing to receive correction when it comes. Communication is a must.
I'm shocked and amazed by the number of artists and creative people who have been wounded and torn when they've attempted to express their creativity. We as the church need to provide a safe place for the arts. We must go beyond tolerating the arts - we are responsible to cultivate them.
The Price for Missed Creativity Can Be Costly and Painful
While I was in Michigan recently, I prayed for a man who has been involved with church ministry for years. As he began to tell me his story, he started to cry like a baby. He told me that as a young boy, he had a propensity towards graphic art and drawing. On one occasion he remembers drawing a picture of sheep. He drew the sheep in all different colors - orange, red, and purple. His parents and some relatives who were visiting at the time began to mock him: "You stupid kid! Sheep aren't red, they're white; they aren't orange, they're white..." etc. They were not able to see the creativity bubbling inside the young boy.
His family's mocking of his art wounded him deeply. He is now in his mid-thirties. He is a tremendous artist, and continues to be healed, but he keeps all of his work hidden. He stuffs his pictures in the bottom of drawers. Over the years he has had many experiences like the incident with his parents, and still needs more time to heal.
Many people have had similar experiences. The brother of a friend of mine is an incredibly artistic person. Growing up, he wanted to dance rather than play sports. He never was real gifted in playing football or any other contact sport. His father wanted him to be involved in sports, and gave him a hard time for wanting to dance. To his dad, that was sissy stuff. The young boy went through all kinds of ridicule which has permanently wounded his spirit.
There are an incredible amount of artists and creative people across the nation and the world. Everywhere I go, even areas that aren't westernized, I see wounding and tearing in the artistic community. Art is so subjective, and this often causes friction.
Art Phobia
In addition, there is so much fear surrounding the arts. Yet if we look at history carefully, we see that music and sound have always been prevalent in any type of spiritual stirring or renewing. You cannot touch the spirit of God and the life of God without experiencing that dynamic.
The Lord wants to create an environment where it's safe for the artistic community to worship Him. That doesn't mean that everyone is free to do whatever they want. It does mean that leadership should be able to give insight, help, and caring. Leadership should provide safe places where the arts can be nurtured, cultivated, and expressed. The church can provide healing for many whose artistic abilities have been stifled or criticized.
U2 Creative for the Church?
There's a well-known rock band named U2. The lead singer, Bono, was part of a Bible study led by a good friend of mine many years ago. My friend told me that he has yet to meet someone with as much passion for God as Bono.
U2 came from the church, but at the time they started, the church didn't know what to do with them. In their biographies, they talk about how they contemplated splitting up the band because they felt like they couldn't play their music and still be called Christians.
Their passion and their talent is incredible, but what we as the church didn't know was where to place them. They ended up playing secular gigs, and have become one of the hottest bands in the world, easily filling up stadiums wherever they play. But they were never given the blessing that they wanted from the church.
It's a tragedy that they couldn't find a place in the church for their kind of artistic expression.
"I'd join the movement, if there was one I could believe in, I would break the bread and the drink the wine if there was a church I could be received in, because I need it now." From Achtung Baby
This song went to the top of the charts! Another song, entitled "One" says:
"You say love's the temple, love's the higher law, you ask me to enter, then you make me crawl, I can't keep hanging on to what you've got, if all you've got is hurt. One love, one blood, we've got to carry each other."
Who's he talking to? The church! I am in no way endorsing the band member's lifestyles, or their decision to step out of the church. What that band does was meant to go to the glory of God. Their musical gifts were meant to be part of our inheritance. But since they were rejected by the church, they naturally migrated to those who would accept them - the "world".
Releasing Creativity
Redeeming the arts, the church is to be the main dispense of creativity, the patron and protector of the arts. God not only wants to awaken the church, he wants to redeem the arts and artists who are in the world and bring them back into the fold.
Artists have an innate need to express themselves through their art. Because they have been stifled in the church, many of us have been led to believe that mediocrity in the arts is acceptable for Christians. Yet this is contrary to the Bible, which tells us to give our very best to our Lord and King. For decades the church has been forced to go to the secular world to get quality. So it was with Solomon who used pagan workmen on the temple. In 2 Chronicles 2:13 we read:
"I am sending you Huram-Abi, a man of great skill, whose mother was from Dan, and whose father was from Tyre. He is trained to work in gold and silver, bronze and iron, stone or wood and with purple and blue and crimson yarn and fine linen. He is experienced in all kinds of engraving and can execute any design given to him. He will work with your craftsmen and with those of my lord David your father."
In 2 Chronicles 5:1-7 we go on to read about the dedication of the temple that is meant to give glory to the Lord. The church needs to nurture the artists so that the mediocrity is driven out and quality is brought back in.
I talked with an English dancer on a plane trip who was not a Christian. As we reflected on creativity, she could not deny the reality of a Creator behind it all. Our conversation opened up the door for sharing Christ. I felt the Lord say, "this is a token of what I want to do in the artistic community."
I met a man in Kansas City who's a stained glass window painter. He approached me, saying, "You saved me, you saved me!" "What do you mean?" I asked. His response was, "I thought my whole life was a waste. I've never led a home group, or done any leadership courses. I haven't done all the things that others have done."
He then showed me a photograph of his work, and it was incredible! This guy was so talented! I told him that I believed that people have actually gotten saved by seeing his work; seeds got planted, and somewhere down the road someone watered and someone else reaped the harvest! The man just started weeping. Here was a guy in his 50's who believed that his whole life had been a waste; he felt he had no relevance to the work of God.
I really believe that, just like this man, many other people have to hear how important their work is in the kingdom, and that their creativity is a gift from the Lord!
